March 16 Palm Sunday Reflection: A Refreshing Desert

Readings:
Isaiah 50:4-7
Psalm 22:8-9,17-18,19-20,23-24
Philippians 2:6-11
Matthew 26"14-27:66 (or Matthew 21:1-11)

"The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road." -Matthew 21:8

Before Jesus entered Jerusalem and even before He began His public life, He prepared Himself. One of the places where he frequented during those days was the desert. He went on a 40-day fast and was tempted in the wilderness. Whenever He needed to pray, the desert was one of His favorite sojourns. Although the desert was an arid and barren place, in a spiritual sense, it was where He could be alone with God and listen to Him.

Before any important religious event, my wife and I make it a point to go on a couple-retreat. The Christmas season and the New Year find us at a hotel or a vacation place, not so much to rest, but to ask God for personal messages. The Lenten season finds us always at home, at church or at a retreat house preparing ourselves for Easter. We find ourselves spiritually refreshed with such preparations.

So during this season, go ahead and wave the palm leaves. But be prepared so that your heart will truly welcome Him.

Reflection:
Does the Lenten season pass without entering through your heart and spirit? Retreat to a spiritual place and prepare well for Easter.

Prayer:
Lord, make my heart a fertile place for You to come and provide growth.
